DJ BABY BOSS
Mr. Southern Ice
While the trend amongst recent innovative DJs is moving toward an “All Genre” style of play, DJ Baby Boss, Infinity resident DJ with more than 10 years of experience and a loyal fanbase, keeps it pure, straight-up hip-hop. He sees no reason to dilute his style to match the DJ crowd, especially with the overwhelming support of hundreds of club-goers and hip-hop enthusiasts that he pulls in consistently each week. Baby’s career started at a local DJ bar, where he had to forego his love for hip-hop in favor of a play-style more in keeping with the venue. Fast-forward to the present: as head DJ at Infinity he fits right in with his raw, authentic brand of hip-hop, sounding more like something you would hear blasting out of the subs at a club in Brooklyn than in our medium-sized city in Southern Japan. Don't be mistaken: in Fukuoka, true unadulterated hip-hop is here to stay, and so is Baby Boss.

Lili
"Come on Hollywood"
Even at below zero Oyafuko's best known social butterfly stays HOT! Caught here purveying her domain, she twist turns and gyrates with comic eroticism and indifference to weather, time and crowds: "Come on Hollywood!" she shouts and Hollywood might just come for this months: Queen of the Night!
Reaching Underground
By its very nature the underground music scene is difficult to embrace, especially for those of us relatively new to the city. It has been said before that mainstream comes to you, but you have to go to the underground, and nowhere is that more true than here in Japan, where the scene lacks the crowds pulled by similar-sized European and American cities. While the local scene is low on hype, the artists here in Fukuoka more than make up for it with their passion. The dedication with which some nights are produced is astounding. And while the crowds are relatively small, there is a sense that there is a real underground movement churning beneath our feet. If you are interested in music and can forgo expectations built back home, now may be a good time for you to get your toes wet. Over the next couple of pages we introduce a few events worth checking out.

Ryan la France
Party Maverick
Ryan la France, a born-and-raised Hawaiian and the often-labeled ruler of the throbbing Fukuoka hip-hop scene, explains the method behind his madness. Open for just 18 months, his club Infinity has quickly become a nightlife landmark for club-goers and DJs alike in the Oyafuko-Nishi area. Interior designer by trade and club promoter by choice, Ryan combined his talents to bring his concept for an international club to life, blending an American club design with rapping Japanese hipsters. However, Ryan attributes most of his success to the tight-knit bond he shares with all his staff and DJs. "It's like a family," Ryan explains. Another distinguishing aspect of Infinity is its flexibility to change with the music and the times, speaking to Ryan's vision of a never-ending party. Satisfied? "I'm very pleased with my success here," Ryan states with a telling grin.
